Fiene Breaks National Record

ERC president Kurt Fiene (shown in photo with Bill Sanders, right, after the race) broke his own national B3 blind half-marathon record on March 15 with a sensational 1:15:43 at the March Madness Half Marathon in Cary, IL. Fiene, 47, finished 5th overall. He was guided on a bike by fellow ERC runner Mark Montgomery. Fiene broke the record he set at the 1994 Philadelphia Distance Run, when he ran 1:15:58.
The US Association for the Blind's B3 category is defined as follows: "From visual acuity above 20/600 and up to visual acuity of 20/200 and/or a visual field of less than 20 degrees and more than 5 degrees in the best eye with the best practical eye correction."
Kurt also hold the B3 records for 8K and 10K. His 8K mark of 29:24, set at the 2003 Shamrock Shuffle, could be broken on March 29 at the same race. He also is eyeing sub-2:45 if conditions are right at the Boston Marathon on April 20.
Congratulations, Kurt!
